Current Priorities

The Royal Melbourne Hospital Foundation needs your help to provide world-class treatment for all Victorians now and into the future.

Outpatients Transformation Project

The Outpatients Transformation Project will deliver extensive expansion and improvements to our Outpatients Department to dramatically improve our patients and their carer’s experience at The Royal Melbourne Hospital. Improved patient outcomes and experience is at the heart of everything we do.

The Transformation Project includes 14 new consulting rooms, an expanded patient waiting room, a nurturing and caring physical environment and a state of the art patient booking system to streamline Clinic appointments. An additional 55,000 Outpatient appointments will be possible each year, and that is a great outcome for our community.

The Foundation has committed $1M to the project and needs a further $1.5M to fully fund this urgently needed project. Generous community support will mean that this urgent project can start as soon as possible. Every gift no matter how small will make a difference.

World Class Research

The Royal Melbourne Hospital Foundation has a strong commitment to research, and works closely with The Royal Melbourne Hospital, Melbourne University, Walter & Eliza Hall Institute and other Parkville Precinct partners to ensure that the Royal Melbourne Hospital maintains a leading role in translating research into practice.

Our Royal Melbourne Hospital researchers and clinical staff provide a bridge linking basic science laboratory research and better patient care – essentially bringing the research bench to the patient’s bedside. “Bench to bedside” research not only aims to find cures for disease in the future, it also aims to improve the lives of patients and their families being cared for at The Royal Melbourne Hospital now.

As Victoria’s first public hospital, The Royal Melbourne Hospital continues to attract the best and brightest minds in research and clinical care. The Royal Melbourne Hospital Foundation is proud to support education positions and programs within the hospital which ensure our practice is patient centred and world-class. With a highly skilled and dedicated staff, we support fostering a culture of academic excellence where education and a thirst for knowledge drives innovation in clinical care.

Leadership and education roles and programs funded by the Royal Melbourne Hospital Foundation allow for an integrated approach to teaching and learning in the Royal Melbourne Hospital, with an emphasis on embracing discovery and achieving the extraordinary.

Technology and Equipment

The Royal Melbourne Hospital Foundation supports the purchase of life-changing and life-saving equipment and technology used in direct patient care and surgical procedures across many departments of The Royal Melbourne Hospital. First rate equipment and leading edge technology helps the Royal Melbourne enhance the quality of health care provided to all patients.

For our patients, access to leading edge technology provides a range of benefits including faster diagnosis, less invasive surgical procedures and reduced hospital stays. Access to more detailed medical information can even prevent the need for surgery or other invasive procedure. For example, advanced portable ultrasound imaging equipment allows our doctors to assess critical care patients in the Emergency Department enabling them to get the right treatment faster.

The Foundation also proudly supports equipment designed to improve the experience of hospitals for our patients and their families. This can include high/low beds which decrease the risk of falling for older patients, comfortable bedside chairs and improved visitors areas for each ward to enable visitors to stay longer with their relatives. Equipment and technology to improve the rehabilitation process for patients following stroke, heart attack and other major debilitating diseases is also an area of focus for the Foundation.

Patient Amenities

Improving the patient experience of healthcare is at the centre of much of our funding. Our aim is to provide not only the best care possible but also to ensure that the hospital experience is as good as it can be. We know that hospitals can be stressful places for both patients and their families and we aim to reduce that stress by creating a welcoming environment, providing assistance to those who may need that extra help and support.

We support the care of patients and their families by bridging the gap between the care The Royal Melbourne Hospital provides, by subsidising a variety of initiatives and programs that would not exist if not for generous donations. These include patient-centred programs, through to music and art therapy. These therapies can reduce anxiety and stress, and have enormous benefits for patients during both inpatient and outpatient treatments.

Hybrid Interventional Operating Room

Currently, the Foundation is raising $2 million for a state-of-the-art Hybrid Interventional Operating Room. We are more than halfway there! Please give so we can bring this life-saving treatment to our Hospital and to Melbourne. We need this advanced technology to enhance patient care, improve outcomes, decrease time spent in hospital and ensuring a more rapid return to work or normal life.
