Our Board

The Royal Melbourne Hospital Foundation is governed by an honorary board consisting of Melbourne Health appointments and Independent Directors and is accountable to the Melbourne Health Board.

The Royal Melbourne Hospital Foundation Board is responsible for overseeing the fundraising activities and all legislative compliance of the Foundation on behalf of the Board of Melbourne Health.

The Royal Melbourne Hospital Foundation Limited “the Foundation” was incorporated in June 2000 under the Corporations Act 2001 (C’th). Its ultimate holding company is Melbourne Health. The Foundation is chaired by Lord Mayor Robert Doyle and currently includes five independent Directors from Medicine, the Corporate Sector and the wider Community.

Lord Mayor Robert Doyle
Chairman, Royal Melbourne Hospital Foundation.

Foundation Chair since August 2007. Mr Doyle was elected Lord Mayor of Melbourne in December 2008. Mr Doyle was a Member of the Victorian Parliament from 1992-2006. His political career includes serving as Leader of the Opposition and Leader of the Liberal Party, Shadow Minister for Health and Parliamentary Secretary for Health.

   
 Dr Gareth Goodier

Dr Gareth Goodier
Chief Executive, Melbourne Health
MB ChB MHA DHSc FRACMA FAFPHM

Dr Goodier commenced in the role as Chief Executive for Melbourne Health on 18 June 2012. Dr Goodier qualified as a medical practitioner in 1974. He practiced as a clinician in the UK, Australia and Saudi Arabia before moving into management.

He has sixteen years experience as the Chief Executive of Academic Teaching Hospitals and seven years as the Chief Executive of Regions or Health Authorities.

Dr Goodier has a Masters in Health Management and specialist medical qualifications in Public Health and Medical Management.

Gareth returned to the UK as the CEO of the Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Trust in 2003 and was later appointed as the CEO of North West London Strategic Health Authority. In September 2006 he was appointed as the CEO of Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. 

   

Mrs Sharon McGowan
Executive Director, Communications and Community Relations.

Director & Company Secretary since September 2010. Ms Sharon McGowan was appointed to the role of Executive Director, Communications and Community Relations, Melbourne Health in September 2010. Previously Deputy Chief Executive Officer at Benetas, Ms McGowan originally trained as a Division 1 Nurse in the UK. MBA and a post Graduate Diploma from the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

 

 

 

Independent Directors

Dr Gad Trevaks AM

A Foundation board member for the past four years, Gad Trevaks’ previous appointments include Director, Office of Research, Melbourne Health; Chairman, Health Commission of Victoria; and Chief Executive Officer and Medical Director, The Royal Women’s Hospital.

Board appointments have included membership of the Board of The Mental Health Research Institute of Victoria, Council of The Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine, Chair of the Howard Florey Human Research Ethics Committee and member, Board of the National Vision Research Institute.

Gad received a Member of the Order of Australia in 1994 for service to health care administration and medicine.

   

Mrs Florence Kingsley-Matthews

Since attending a rehabilitation programme at The Royal Melbourne Hospital in 2004, Florence Kingsley-Matthews has been a Foundation board member, dedicated volunteer, and patient advocate.

Florence’s volunteer work has included time as a member of the Royal Melbourne Health Consumer Advisory Committee; as a Consumer representative on the Panel for the Clinical Ethics Forum; and participation in several Root Cause Analyses (a structured approach to identifying factors that result in harmful patient outcomes).

Previously, Florence held various senior managerial roles within the Banking and Finance Industry in both sales and operations.

   

Mr Peter Zwar
Director since October 2010.

Peter Zwar has a long-standing relationship with Royal Melbourne Hospital through his father (a medicine student in the early 1940s) and his grandfather (Hospital President from 1937-1945). As an Engineer, and in his early career, Peter designed hospital equipment (including sterilizers), many of where were supplied to Royal Melbourne.

Moving from engineering into financial planning in the 1980s, Peter brings a wealth of commercial financial experience gained through exposure to a major bank and a boutique (and now publicly listed) funds management company.

In recent years Peter has developed a deep interest in the non-for-profit sector, reinforced through his work experience with Perpetual Trustees.

Peter is married to Vicki and they have two teenage sons, Richard and William.

   

Mr Nick Alexander
Director since February 2012.

Nick Alexander has been a Foundation board member since February 2012. Beginning his career which began in the oil and automotive industries, Nick moved into investment research and private banking.

Previously a Director of ANZ Grindlay's International Private Bank (UK) he recently spent four years with Credit Suisse Private Banking. He has held a number of other private and ASX-listed board positions and has been a lecturer at Monash University.

For over two decades Nick has held his own financial services licence (AFSL). He currently provides financial services and advice to private and family office clients.

   

Mr Mark Kagan
Director since May 2012. 

Mark Kagan is a Company Director and owner of Scarpa Imports Pty Ltd: a Melbourne-based importer and wholesaler of greeting cards, wrapping paper, books, journals and associated products. Mark is also a former Director and former owner of Kagan Logistics Pty Ltd sold to private equity in 2008.

Mark holds degrees in Economics and Law from Monash University and practiced as a solicitor for many years. He has successfully completed the Australian Institute of Company Directors’ Course and is married with three sons.

   

Mr Roland Van Bommel
Director since May 2012.

Roland Van Bommel brings a wealth of international experience to the Royal Melbourne Hospital Foundation. Current board appointments include Non-Executive Director of Taylors Wines Pty Ltd; Non-Executive Director of Crescendo Partners and an Advisory Board Member of WhistlePig.

From a career which began with Unilever PLC in the Netherlands, Indonesia and Bangladesh – Roland’s executive experience includes London-based William Grant and Sons Distillers; Remy Cointreau and with Maxxium Worldwide.

Roland is a graduate of the University of Houston (BBA), the University of London/School of Oriental and African studies (MA), and Harvard Business School (Advanced Management Program). He is a member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and the New Zealand Institute of Directors.
